Using Light

9/2/2018

The use of light is important to art, an understatement. Light and dark gives contrast, sets the mood, emphasizes or understates a subject, whether in sculpture, paintings, photography, prints, etchings...

Then there are some artists who use light itself to create art. Enter Dan Flavin, an American artist (1933-1996) who used florescent light tubes to create his icons of minimalism.  Because lights burn out, he included instructions to galleries on how to replace a bulb. (It was harder than you might think.)  Learn more about Flavin.

Our own Deshia Williams not only uses light but sound which changes the light patterns and colors in her exhibit: Human at Art Works. Come experience this at the gallery through September 20, 2018 (Tuesday-Sunday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.) Free and open to the public.

They are there. They've always been there but ignored or forgotten until...

Take a look at this film. See how women are innovators, movers, shakers.

Speaking of innovators, meet Deisha William. Her exhibit "Human" at Art Works Galley is a social commentary of light (some images below).

Define Art

9/1/2018

...definitions of art, like those of beauty, are subjective and unstable. One solution to this dilemma is to propose that art is distinguished primarily by its visual agency, that is, by its ability to captivate viewers.*

So with this definition, you the viewer, play an important part in art!  With that in mind, scroll through our contemporary art on this site and let us know what you like. We're interested in your definition.
